Centennial Park Labyrinth

Artists Impression - Centennial Park Labyrinth

The Centennial Park and Moore Park Trust and Centennial Parklands Foundation have approved the design, location and installation of Sydney's first public sandstone labyrinth in Centennial Park.

The Centennial Park Labyrinth is a positive addition to the community, and is sympathetic to the landscape and character of the Parklands. It will create a tranquil, contemplative location for park visitors while maintaining a non-denominational and cross-cultural asset for visitors to learn and enjoy.

Research from across Australia and overseas has demonstrated the mental health benefits of contact with nature and spending time in parks. The Labyrinth is a further commitment by the Trust and Foundation into creating a multi-purpose public space for the betterment of the community.

Labyrinths

A labyrinth is a simple contemplative pathway. Unlike a maze, which has several different pathways, a labyrinth has only one path and there are no dead ends, so you can't get lost. A maze is an intellectual exercise and a labyrinth is a spiritual one.

There are many ways to describe a labyrinth - a path of prayer, a walking meditation or a watering hole for the spirit. It is a universal and non-denominational symbol, used by many different cultures over 4,000 years. It is an inclusive sacred space which welcomes people of all faiths.

The Centennial Park Labyrinth

Centennial Park Labyrinth designThe Centennial Park Labyrinth will be an 11 circuit sandstone labyrinth, based on the design of the medieval labyrinth in Chartres Cathederal in France (read further technical information on the Chartres Cathedral Labyrinth).

It is proposed that the Labyrinth will be located adjacent to Willow Pond in Centennial Park, on an existing area of flat open space behind a screen of trees.

Although concept, design and location proposals have been approved, the development and delivery of the eventual Labyrinth is contingent upon the necessary funds being raised to complete the project.
