Inner Circle Planting - Stage One completed

Posted: 17 May 2010

The planting of the first stage of the Inner Circle Tree Planting Project has been completed.

This project was launched at Evergreen Dinner 2009 and the generosity of donors at the Dinner along with individuals who have contributed separately, means the Inner Circle is taking shape quickly. This project aims to plant 102 trees inside the perimeter of the equestrian rail fence that follows Grand Drive, Centennial Park.

The first 15 trees in Stage One of the project have been planted, with the remaining 87 trees to be planted in future stages.

In order to maintain the characteristic avenue design of Grand Drive, additional tree planting will also be undertaken. With the majority of the trees on Grand Drive being mature, a long term plan for the preservation of the tree lined avenues, which are characteristic of Centennial Parklands was required. These new trees planted now, will provide a avenue planting when the original avenue plantings become over-mature, die or are removed.

The initial 15 trees are Lemon Scented Gum trees (Corymbia citriodora), noted for their foliage, which is aromatic when crushed.

These specimens have been grown to order by specialist tree suppliers specifically for the Inner Circle.

During planting, the addition of compost and a layer of mulch, coupled with regular watering and maintenance during the trees’ first years, will ensure establishment of this key design element of Centennial Parklands. The trees are also surrounded by wooden tree guards to provide a visually appealing element which also protects these trees during the establishment period. It is expected that once the trees have grown to a significant size, the guards will be removed.

The Centennial Parklands Foundation wishes to thank the generous donors for their support in this project.
