Centennial Parklands
The Foundation is grateful for the support of each and every benefactor.
Ten young people from inner Sydney and its surrounds have completed a six month Green Corps program in Centennial Parklands.
During this time they participated in ecological restoration projects while at the same time attaining the qualification of Certificate 1 Conservation and Land Management.
The participants undertook a variety of projects including native landscaping and slope stabilisation works and improving the water quality of the ponds within the park by restoring riparian vegetation and harvesting of European Carp (Cyprinus carpio).
Greening Australia and the Centennial Parklands Foundation have worked in partnership to provide these ten young Australians with a qualification and experience in ecological and environmental restoration.
Projects such as these are essential to the protection and maintenance of these important urban ecosystems. The work carried out by the Green Corps participants benefits not only the fauna and flora within Centennial Park, but also contributes greatly to the enjoyment of the many thousands of people who use the Parklands every week.
Sarah Whyte, Chair of the Foundation said: ‘The Foundation is once again delighted to support this Australian Government initiative. The projects undertaken by this year’s team have greatly contributed to Centennial Parklands’ environmental restorations and the preservation of our Parklands’ unique natural resources for future generations.’
Green Corps is an Australian Government initiative, delivered by Greening Australia, giving people aged 17-20 the opportunity to receive accredited training and a youth participation allowance, while working on environment and heritage projects across Australia.
A graduation ceremony for the participants was held on Tuesday 2 June 2009 at 11.00 am at the formal lawn, next to the Rose Garden in Centennial Park.
