Opportunities

The Volunteer Program at Centennial Parklands is an important opportunity for the community to contribute to environmental projects in the Parklands.  Volunteers contribute approximately 2,100 hours per year of invaluable support.

Volunteer projects at Centennial Parklands include:

Bush Regeneration - Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub

This volunteer project began in February 2004 and has involved the bush regeneration of two remnants of endangered Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub located on York Road, Queens Park and the Bird Sanctuary, Centennial Park. A team of 20 volunteers have been assisting professional bush regenerators with a range of tasks including manual weed removal, construction of fauna hides, dumped rubbish removal and the relocation of organic debris. It has also provided the opportunity for volunteers to learn correct regeneration procedures, the ecology of Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub and how to identify invasive weed species.

Visitor Information counter

A team of volunteers assists our Customer Service staff to provide information at the Visitor Information Counter within the new Restaurant precinct. These volunteers are the face of the Parklands and share their knowledge, enjoyment and fondness of Centennial Park with our many visitors. We are in the process of recruiting volunteers for these new positions which will be available on a rostered basis 7 days per week between the hours of 11.00am to 2.00pm.

Volunteer Growing Group

The Centennial Parklands Foundation funded the construction of a plant propagation and nursery facility in February 2007. The Growing Group volunteers focus on propagating and selling plant species found within the Parklands Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub (ESBS) threatened species sites, and also the exotic species found growing within the Parklands Horticultural displays. Propagation of the ESBS species will increase community awareness of the Parklands threatened species areas, whilst the propagation of exotics for plant sales will increase community knowledge of the plants used within the Parklands horticultural precinct.

Litter Patrols

Each year Centennial Parklands participates in Clean Up Australia Day and we welcome all volunteers to join us on that day. This year 41 participants collected 30 bags of rubbish. Litter collection as part of a wider corporate volunteer day is also supported.
